Trauma and Stress-Related Disorders
Trauma and stress-related disorders involve serious psychological reactions that occur after exposure to a traumatic or stressful event such as abuse, physical or sexual assault, natural disaster, or an accident. Two of the most common of these disorders are acute stress disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Individuals with either of these diagnoses typically experience intrusive symptoms (including distressing memories, nightmares, or flashbacks), negative alterations in mood and thinking (such as anger, feelings of detachment, or loss of interest), and hyper-arousal symptoms (including sleep disturbance and hypervigilance). They also avoid distressing trauma-related stimuli, including both internal reminders (i.e., thoughts) and external reminders of the event. Individuals with more severe forms of PTSD sometimes experience dissociative symptoms, such as depersonalization and derealization.
