Neuropsychologists are professionals with doctoral degrees in psychology who have specialized training in the functioning of the brain and the impact of brain dysfunction on cognitive abilities, behaviors, and emotions. UCN’s Dr. Shapiro completed a two-year post-doctoral fellowship in neuropsychology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore following her neuropsychology residency at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans.

A complete evaluation usually takes 4-5 hours to complete, but it can take up to eight hours depending on the complexity of the case or the diagnostic question. Occasionally, it is necessary to complete the evaluation over two or more sessions.

At UCN, only the neuropsychologist administers the tests. Unlike some other practices, UCN does NOT have technicians or students work with patients.

This depends on your child’s age and circumstances. However, in general, explain that the doctor will ask questions and have him/her do puzzles and activities to figure out how s/he learns best. You also can explain that the testing will help clarify your child’s strengths and weaknesses so that the doctor can provide recommendations for school.

Please bring any relevant medical and school records, particularly any IEP or 504 educational plans, report cards, teacher notes/emails, and standardized test scores. School work samples may also be helpful for the doctor to understand your child’s difficulties.

A feedback session to review all test results, impressions, and recommendations is scheduled when the testing is completed, usually within two to three weeks. Then, the final report will be provided within one to two weeks after the feedback session.

UCN does not accept third party reimbursement from insurance carriers. Patients are responsible for full payment at the time of the appointment. If you have out-of-network benefits, you will be provided with the appropriate paperwork to get reimbursed directly from the insurance company. Please check with your insurance company regarding mental health coverage and reimbursement for your particular benefit plan.
